Which Splitwise export should you use?

SplitterUp reads either kind of Splitwise export — pick whichever one your account can produce.

Have Splitwise Pro? Export a full backup.

From Splitwise, go to Account settings → Export your data. The backup is one JSON file that brings over every group at once, along with everyone's email address.

On a free Splitwise account? Export each group.

Open a group, then Group settings → Export as spreadsheet. That gives you a CSV for that one group, with people identified by first name only.

Either way, you can add more than one file to a single import — several group spreadsheets, or a spreadsheet alongside a backup. SplitterUp just reads the file itself; it never asks for your Splitwise login or API access.

Bringing your people along

Match, invite, or save for later

Everyone from your Splitwise export becomes a saved person in SplitterUp. From there you can invite anyone by email, or match them to a friend you already have on SplitterUp — if they used the same email on Splitwise, SplitterUp suggests the match for you. Matching sends them a connect request: nothing moves to their account until they accept, and once they do, they choose which of your imported groups to actually join.

The import wizard — like the rest of SplitterUp — is available in English, Español (Latinoamérica), Deutsch, Slovenčina, Polski, Français, Čeština, Português (Brasil), and Italiano.

Common questions

No. SplitterUp checks what's already been imported and skips it, so re-running an import — on purpose or because it got interrupted — never duplicates an expense or a payment.

Nothing is lost. Keep the app open while an import runs, and if it does get interrupted, starting it again picks up right where it stopped.

Yes, to the cent. If anything about a group's balances would come out differently than what Splitwise reported, the Review step flags it and explains why before you import.

Yes. A free account can export a spreadsheet for one group at a time from that group's settings, and you can add as many of those files as you have groups to bring in.

Only if you match them to an existing SplitterUp friend during the People step. That sends them a connect request, and nothing moves to their account until they accept — at which point they choose which of your imported groups to join.
