Settle up in the fewest payments.
By default, SplitterUp combines everyone's debts in a group into the fewest payments that settle it — so you might pay someone you never shared an expense with directly. Prefer to see who owes whom, person by person? A group admin can turn it off.
Simplify Debts on (the default). The fewest payments that settle the whole group. Without simplifying: 5.
- Alice pays Dana$62
- Charlie pays Dana$15
- Bob pays Dana$5
Everyone's total stays the same in every view. Only who pays whom changes.
How it works
Add expenses as usual
Everyone logs what they paid and who it was for. Nothing changes about how you split.
SplitterUp nets the group out
If Alice owes Bob $20 and Bob owes Charlie $20, Alice pays Charlie $20 directly — one payment does the work of two.
Settle up in a few payments
You get the fewest payments that settle the whole group. Nobody's total changes, only who pays whom.
Prefer person-by-person? Turn it off.
In Group Settings, under Settle Up, switch off Simplify Debts. It's on by default, and only group admins can change it.
- Each amount is what one person owes another, based only on what you paid and split together.
- You may see more payments, but each one is with someone you shared an expense with.
- The Balances tab and the expense breakdown always say which kind of amount you're looking at.
Nobody's total ever changes when you switch. Payments made while simplifying was on count as plain transfers, so a past re-routed payment can now show up as someone owing you directly.
If someone in your group is on an older version of the app, their screen may keep showing combined amounts until they update.
