Introducing Splitwise Import: Bring Your History to SplitterUp

Switching expense-splitting apps has always meant a choice: settle every balance to zero and start over, or stay put because rebuilding months of groups by hand isn't worth it. That second option is why a lot of people frustrated with Splitwise never actually leave.

SplitterUp removes that choice. If you have Splitwise Pro, export your full account backup — one JSON file with every group at once — from Account settings → Export your data. On the free plan, export one group at a time as a spreadsheet from Group settings → Export as spreadsheet. Either way, open Account → Import from Splitwise in SplitterUp, add the file, and your groups, expenses, payments, and balances come across matched to the cent, with nothing duplicated if you run it twice. Before anything is written to your account, a review step shows exactly what's about to happen, so there's nothing to discover after the fact.

Everyone in your export lands as a saved person automatically, so nobody else has to do anything for the import itself to work. From there you can invite them by email, or match them to a friend you already have on SplitterUp — matching sends a connect request, and nothing moves until they accept.

A couple of things stay behind: receipt photos and comments on expenses remain in Splitwise, and an import covers one Splitwise account at a time. Nothing that should stop most groups from making the move.

The import wizard works in all six languages SplitterUp supports: English, Español (Latinoamérica), Deutsch, Slovenčina, Polski, and Français.
